Miracle 10-hour surgery cures man's debilitating head twitch

A 28-year-old man in Iraq underwent a 10-hour operation to cure his uncontrollable head twitch that left him bed-ridden for three years.

Saad Harbi Haid Al-Karawi spent the last 14 years suffering from a rare neurological disorder called dystonia, which makes the muscles contract involuntarily and can cause repetitive twisting movements. It can be incredibly painful and the cause of dystonia is not fully known.

According to Mirror.co, doctors at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute in India, led by Dr. Sandeep Vaishya, were able to cure Haid Al-Karawi after a lengthy procedure called Bilateral Globus Pallidus Internus Deep Brain Stimulation, which is typically used on patients with Parkinson's.

The surgeons placed electrodes deep into Haid Al-Karawi's brain which will "deliver carefully controlled electrical stimulation to targeted areas in the brain," said Dr. Vaishya. The surgery has a margin error of less than 0.5mm.
