Missing: Has Ranbir Kapoor bid goodbye to his acting career?

If you've been wondering why hasn't Ranbir Kapoor appeared on the big screen after 'Sanju', which was three years ago, we are in the same boat.

If the phrase 'out of sight, out of mind' is coined specifically for Bollywood stars, then Ranbir Kapoor has been missing in action from the big screen, when his contemporaries are making sure to stay relevant in any way possible.

In the time when most actors are starring in one to two films a year, why is Ranbir Kapoor so picky when it comes to his films?

The filmy gene in his blood

As the great-grandson of the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor, acting and Bollywood runs in the Kapoor family with almost everyone in the family a big screen star in their own measure. Ranbir, being the infamous son of Neetu and Rishi Kapoor, started young in the industry, with his first job being assistant director to his father on the film 'Aa Ab Laut Chalen' (1999), starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Khanna.

Kapoor relocated to New York City to learn filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts, and subsequently pursued method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. When he came back, he assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his movie 'Black' in 2005. Describing his experience with Bhansali, he said, "I was getting beaten up, abused, doing everything from cleaning the floor to fixing the lights from 7am to 4am, but I was learning every day." His hard work seemed to pay off as he became the hero of Bhansali's next film.

A star debut

In 2007, Ranbir made his acting debut with another star kid, Sonam Kapoor, in 'Saawariya'. There were high expectations from this Kapoor kid but the movie failed to impress the audience. But critics seemed to have found an actor that possessed a 'star quality' and awarded him with a Filmfare Award of Best Male Debut.

'High' on success

His next films that followed after the debut, 'Bachna Ae Haseeno', 'Wake Up Sid', 'Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani' and 'Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year', not only made people sit up and take notice of his acting skills, but his popularity grew among movie enthusiasts.

While films like 'Raajneeti', 'Anjaana Anjaani' and 'Rockstar' establishing him as one of the best actors in Bollywood, it was 'Barfi!' in 2012 that topped the charts, making a billion at the box office. But it was 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', a film with his ex-girlfriend, Deepika Padukone, that stole every girl's heart, making it one of the highest grossing Indian film of all time.

Slipping off the ladder

After riding on a success 'high', Ranbir met with failure in his next films like 'Besharam', 'Roy', 'Tamasha' and 'Jagga Jasoos'. It was Karan Johar's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' and Rajkumar Hirani's Sanjay Dutt biopic 'Sanju' that still kept him in the good graces of the audience and the critics.

As much as his work and films and acting was talked about, so was his personal life, with Kapoor being linked with almost every actress he worked with. While filming 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' in 2008, Ranbir started dating his co-star Deepika Padukone, a relationship which attracted substantial media coverage. The couple broke up later that year, with rumours of Kapoor's infidelity reported highly in the papers.

The actor is currently dating Alia Bhatt, with rumours of a wedding soon to take place. In an interview with the film critic and journalist Rajeev Masand, Ranbir opened up about his personal life and the impending wedding.

Ranbir said that the 'deal' would have been ‘sealed’ had the pandemic not hit. 'I don’t want to jinx it by saying anything. I want to tick mark that goal very soon in my life’, he said.

The 'forgotten star' or struck with bad luck?

With his last film being in 2018, Kapoor's upcoming projects have been stalled due to the pandemic. He had four movies lined up, including feature opposite Alia Bhatt in a fantasy film trilogy, the first of which is named 'Brahmastra'.

So fans of Ranbir, be patient while the actor preps himself to come back with a bang after this pandemic.
