MLB roundup: Manny Machado's 5 RBIs lift COVID-19 plagued Padres

Manny Machado hit a two-run homer and a three-run triple, leading the San Diego Padres to an 8-1 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night in Denver.

Reliever Miguel Diaz (1-0) tossed three shutout innings for San Diego, which was without Fernando Tatis Jr. The star shortstop tested positive for the coronavirus, as did Wil Myers, who was pulled from the game in the third inning. Both were placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Eric Hosmer was also removed from the game in the seventh inning due to contact tracing, and he subsequently was placed on the COVID-19 IL, as were two teammates pregame, utility men Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo.

The Rockies, who managed just three hits total against five pitchers, have lost four in a row and have scored just one run in the past two games.

Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela (1-4) was activated from the 10-day injured list after recovering from a right groin strain and looked fine until running into trouble in the sixth inning. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in five-plus innings while striking out four.

Diamondbacks 11, Marlins 3

Madison Bumgarner pitched seven scoreless innings, Asdrubal Cabrera went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and Nick Ahmed hit his first homer of the season to lead Arizona over Miami in Phoenix.

Bumgarner (4-2) allowed four hits and no walks while striking out a season-high nine batters. He retired the last nine batters he faced, and he also had a sacrifice fly for his first RBI of the season. In consecutive starts against Miami, Bumgarner has allowed just six hits, no walks and one run while striking out 16 batters in 13 innings.

Miami's Jesus Aguilar finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run homer, hitting his big fly after Bumgarner departed.

Dodgers 6, Mariners 4

Gavin Lux hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning as Los Angeles rallied for a victory over visiting Seattle in the opener of a two-game interleague series.

Max Muncy hit a home run for the Dodgers and Corey Seager had a two-run single in the seventh inning as the Dodgers won for just the second time in their last seven games and the third time in their last 11.

Mitch Haniger hit a pair of home runs for the Mariners and Yusei Kikuchi struck out a career-high 11. Kyle Seager had a two-run home run as the Mariners fell for the second time in three games against the Dodgers.

Cardinals 6, Brewers 1 (11 innings)

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning and Tyler O'Neill followed with a three-run blast to lift visiting St. Louis over Milwaukee.

Alex Reyes (2-0), the fifth Cardinals pitcher, worked two scoreless, hitless innings for the win. He walked three and fanned five. The Cardinals won for the 14th time in 18 games.

Brewers starter Freddy Peralta yielded only one hit in seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight and walked only one. Brad Boxberger (0-1) allowed the five 11th-inning runs, four earned.

Astros 5, Angels 1

Michael Brantley delivered an RBI single before Yuli Gurriel added a three-run home run in the eighth inning as Houston won at home against Los Angeles.

Brantley plated Jose Altuve with his hit off Alex Claudio, snapping a 1-1 tie resulting from a dazzling pitching duel between Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (3-1) and Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani. Gurriel followed two batters later with a two-out blast into the Crawford Boxes in left for his sixth home run.

Kyle Tucker clubbed an opposite-field, leadoff homer to left off Ohtani in the fifth inning before Taylor Ward knotted the game with his solo shot to right off McCullers with one out in the eighth. Tucker socked his club-leading seventh home run while Ward recorded his second of 2021.

White Sox 9, Twins 3

Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run homer, Jose Abreu added a two-run shot and Chicago overpowered visiting Minnesota.

Tim Anderson, Adam Eaton, Leury Garcia and Nick Madrigal drove in one run apiece for the White Sox, who won their fourth straight game to match their longest winning streak of the season.

Jorge Polanco homered for the Twins, who have lost five of six. Minnesota scored the first three runs of the game before allowing Chicago to score nine unanswered.

Tigers 8, Royals 7

Robbie Grossman ripped a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth to help host Detroit rally after squandering a seven-run lead vs. Kansas City.

Grossman had five RBIs, including a three-run triple. Akil Baddoo reached base five times, scoring two runs and knocking in another, while Niko Goodrum scored three times, including the winning run.

Jorge Soler drove in six runs for Kansas City with a three-run homer and three-run double.

Phillies 6, Nationals 2

Bryce Harper homered, walked twice and scored two runs to lift Philadelphia past host Washington.

Odubel Herrera doubled twice, walked twice and scored two runs while Andrew Knapp added a two-run pinch-hit single for the Phillies. Starting catcher J.T. Realmuto left in the seventh inning after being hit by a foul ball on his left knee.

Trea Turner had three hits, including a home run, for the Nationals, who have dropped three in a row. Juan Soto singled and walked three times.

Blue Jays 5, Braves 3

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered and drove in three runs, including an RBI in Toronto's go-ahead, three-run rally in the eighth inning, and the visiting Blue Jays defeated Atlanta.

Guerrero finished 3-for-5 and hit his eighth homer, his first since his three-homer game against the Washington Nationals on April 27. Toronto's Robbie Ray worked six innings and allowed three runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out a season-high 10.

Ronald Acuna Jr. drove in two runs on two hits, including a solo homer -- his 10th homer of the season.

Yankees 3, Rays 1

Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez knocked solo home runs as New York beat Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Judge went 2-for-4, Sanchez ripped his fourth homer and closer Aroldis Chapman worked around an error and a walk in a scoreless ninth to go to 8-for-8 in saves as the Yankees beat Tampa Bay for just the sixth time in the past 24 matchups.

Tampa Bay catcher Mike Zunino tied for the team lead with his seventh home run, but the Rays posted just three hits and lost for the third time in four outings.

Athletics 3, Red Sox 2

Matt Chapman hit a go-ahead single during Oakland's two-run seventh as the Athletics beat host Boston to open a three-game series.

Matt Olson and Elvis Andrus each drove in a run for Oakland. Athletics starter Chris Bassitt (3-2) struck out a season-high 10 batters while allowing two runs on three hits and zero walks over seven innings. Oakland has won six of its last nine and tied the major league lead for victories at 22.

Rafael Devers had a solo home run and J.D. Martinez an RBI for the Red Sox, who have dropped two straight after winning four in a row.

Mets 3, Orioles 2

Jonathan Villar beat the throw home on pinch hitter Patrick Mazeika's ninth-inning grounder to first, scoring the winning run as New York defeated Baltimore.

New York's Dominic Smith singled home the tying run earlier in the ninth. The Mets earned their sixth straight win while the Orioles lost for the fourth time in five games.

Jeurys Familia (1-0), who threw a scoreless inning, got the win. The Mets' late rally cost a victory for Baltimore starter John Means, who fired six shutout innings in his first outing since throwing a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners.

Pirates 7, Reds 2

Adam Frazier homered and JT Brubaker pitched six strong innings as host Pittsburgh ended an eight-game losing streak to Cincinnati.

Troy Stokes Jr. added an RBI double and an RBI single, Kevin Newman a run-scoring triple and Phillip Evans an RBI double for Pittsburgh. The Pirates lost their first four games against the Reds this year by a combined 44-9 and, dating to last year, had lost eight straight against Cincinnati.

Jesse Winker had a homer, two doubles and two RBIs for Cincinnati. Reds starter Jeff Hoffman (2-3) gave up three runs and four hits in four innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Indians 3, Cubs 2

Cesar Hernandez and Jose Ramirez each homered as Cleveland beat visiting Chicago and won for the 11th time in 14 games.

Shane Bieber (4-2) allowed two runs on nine hits, with eight strikeouts, over 6 2/3 innings. He threw 121 pitches, the most in the majors this season.

Adbert Alzolay (1-3) struck out six and gave up three runs over six frames for the Cubs, who have lost two straight following a five-game winning streak.

Giants 4, Rangers 2

Logan Webb struck out a career-high 10 in six-plus innings and host San Francisco took advantage of Texas walks and miscues to complete a two-game interleague sweep.

Mike Yastrzemski had the biggest of the Giants' four hits, an RBI double in a two-run first inning that gave San Francisco the lead for good in the well-pitched series finale. Webb (2-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks.

The Rangers got a solo homer from David Dahl. Texas starter Jordan Lyles (1-3) yielded two runs on two hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out six.
