International money transfer service Transferwise has been hit by a major technical glitch leaving scores of users worrying if their transactions have gone through.

The app, which has an estimated 1 million users, admitted gremlins had struck at its website meaning new payments could not be set up.

Dozens of people on Twitter contacted the UK-based service to say payments appears to have been made but no confirmation received or that they had been trying to move money into or from their online accounts but the website was unresponsive.

In a series of tweets, Transferwise said they were aware of various issues and that engineers were working on them.

Replying to one user, it said: “Sorry about this. Our developers are working hard to fix the technical issue and we will update everyone asap!”

And in another, it said: “We’re experiencing some issues with our website meaning you won’t be able to set up new payments. All the received payments are transferred as usual.

“We are investigating and we´ll give an update asap. If you have questions about a specific payment, please send us details over DM.”

The issues appear to have begun earlier on Tuesday with many customers reporting error codes when trying to access their accounts or perform transactions.

Transferwise, launched in 2011, offers competitive money exchange rates for 28 currencies. Its unique premise works on the fact that it holds significant amounts of currency so more of your dollars, pounds, euros or whatever actually gets transferred to the recipient and less is lost to the vagaries of exchange rate fluctuations.
