More Than 100 Plymouth Rock Assurance Employees Continue an 18-Year Tradition at the JDRF One Walk

New Jersey Insurance Group Leads Efforts to Support Local Charities

Eleven-year-old Liam Jones will join his father, Brad, and nearly 200 other walkers at the JDRF One Walk on Sunday, October 11.Click here for high-resolution version

RED BANK, NJ--(Marketwired - October 07, 2015) - Eight to 10 times each day Liam Jones sticks his finger with a lancet needle. It's a routine the 11-year-old follows to check his blood sugar and manage his Type 1 diabetes. While Liam's disease currently has no cure, he's working to change that.

Liam and close to 200 Plymouth Rock Assurance employees, family and friends will participate in the Central Jersey JDRF One Walk in Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey. The October 11 event raises awareness of Type 1 diabetes and money for research. At Liam's side will be his father, Brad Jones, Director of Plymouth Rock's Service Center.

This year marks the 18th time since 1998 that Plymouth Rock employees have participated in a JDRF One Walk.

"I always look forward to this event," said Gerry Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Plymouth Rock Management Company of New Jersey. "Plymouth Rock employees don't stop caring about others after the office closes. Our company's culture has always been about making things better. The people who work here are committed to making a difference in their communities."

Among Plymouth Rock's community contributions:

  • Dozens of New Jersey nonprofit groups benefit each year from employee donations matched by the Plymouth Rock Foundation.

  • Plymouth Rock's Teachers' Insurance Plan of NJ has given nearly $200,000 to schools and school districts in New Jersey since March 2007.

  • Six charities, including JDRF, benefit from Plymouth Rock's Pledge of Assurance customer service guarantee.

The ultimate goal for JDRF, a global nonprofit that funds Type 1 diabetes research, is to cure the disease. People with the disease cannot produce insulin -- a hormone that helps turn food into energy. The disease strikes children, like Liam, and adults suddenly. It is unrelated to diet or lifestyle.

"I have to be very careful about living with diabetes because it's dangerous," Liam said. "But I still have to have fun."
