Supermarket chain Morrisons (MRW.L) said it is offering those in the emergency services, care workers and armed forces a 10% discount on their shopping in all 498 of its stores across the UK.

The move comes after it offered a 10% discount to NHS and school staff.

Anyone who holds a Blue Light Card is eligible. The card is a national scheme for those working in the public sector. It provides a range of discounts from national retailers to local businesses.

Essential workers can pay £4.99 ($6.68) for a two-year membership to the service and around 2.3 million people are members. Other retailers that are part of the scheme include New Look, River Island, schuh, O2 and Paperchase.

Members include those who work in the ambulance and fire services, the police, Border Force, British Army, HM Coastguard, Prison Service, Red Cross, Reserve Armed Force, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines and Royal Navy.

Staff can also get money off at restaurants, hardware stores and hotels.

“The Morrisons discount, which is valid till after Christmas, is a thank you to the thousands of key workers including social care workers who have gone above and beyond their usual roles to provide care and support to the British public throughout the coronavirus pandemic this year,” the company said in a statement.

Blue Light Card holders will also be able to participate in a dedicated shopping hour alongside NHS workers and school staff from 6am-7am, Monday to Saturday, before Morrisons stores open to other customers.

Tom Dalby, CEO of Blue Light Card, said, “I hope that this partnership will make the Christmas food shop that little bit easier for those who go the furthest for us.”

According to YouGov, Morrisons is the most popular supermarket chain in the UK, followed by Lidl and M&S Foods, based on data collected between July and October 2020.

Last week, consumer group Which? awarded a “Best Buy” status to a Morrison’s champagne.

“In a blind tasting of supermarket own-label (or exclusive), and top-selling big-name non-vintage champagnes priced up to £36, the Which? panel of experts awarded the highest score of 82 per cent to Morrison’s Adrien Chopin Brut Champagne,” the group said.

“Retailing at only £18, this Which? Best Buy was described as ‘golden champagne with stewed apple aromas, rich flavours and a hint of sweetness’ winning the adoration of experts to become this year’s top-scorer,” the statement added.
