The majority of Brits want to move jobs but won’t because salaries on offer are “too low,” new research shows.

A survey of 2,000 people by job board CV-Library has found that despite nine in 10 UK professionals currently considering a job swap, two in five (57%) will not because they believe the salaries on offer aren’t high enough.

But it’s not just salaries holding Brits back – a third (31%) admitted they don’t feel confident enough to apply for a new job.

This figure rose to 55% among 65 and overs, and a third among 18- to 24-year-olds.

Those aged 45 to 54 are most concerned with low salaries, with three in five (63%) not pursuing new job opportunities as a result, the survey found.

On the other hand, four in five (82%) 18- to 24-year-olds believe they don’t have enough experience to apply for a new job.

On top of this, one in 10 (11%) 25- to 34-year-olds simply “can’t be bothered” to look for a new job, while a third aged 55 to 64 have concerns about the state of the economy.

Lee Biggins, CEO of CV-Library said low salaries should not put off anyone who wants to apply for a new job.

“There’s always room for negotiation when it comes to pay,” he said.

The research also found almost a quarter (23%) of Brits are worried about losing their current job.

But they can rest these worries – nine in 10 (92%) UK employers said they are confident about retaining employees for the next six months.

Biggins said: “As the media continues to report on job cuts across the UK, it’s no wonder that professionals are nervous about losing their jobs.

“Yet, it’s clear from our findings that UK employers are confident about their employee retention efforts.

“If you are concerned about the future of your career with your current employer, it’s definitely worth speaking to your manager or HR about the options available to you. You never know, it may give you the push you need to look for a new job!”
