MP Back In Shadow Cabinet After Unresigning

A senior Labour MP has been accepted back by Jeremy Corbyn as shadow home office minister after she resigned last month.

Sarah Champion quit at the end of June as part of the revolt against Labour's leader Jeremy Corbyn, claiming his position was no longer tenable.

The Rotherham MP said his refusal to accept a motion of no confidence, backed by 172 of the party's MPs, showed why his leadership could not continue.

At the time, she said: "I can only do what I feel is right, even though it's breaking my heart."

She has now returned to the front bench focusing on women, equality and domestic violence issues.

In a letter to Mr Corbyn she wrote: "I would like to formally retract my resignation and ask to be reinstated as my role as shadow home office minister for preventing abuse and domestic violence with immediate effect".

Sky's Political Correspondent Darren McCaffrey said: "I have learnt from Jeremy Corbyn's office that he has accepted that unresignation and she is now back as a shadow minister.

"We are not entirely sure why she has made this decision, we know she is a big campaigner on domestic violence, but she did resign, she clearly didn't think Jeremy Corbyn was the right person to lead the party.

"But there are rumours at Westminster that Jeremy Corbyn is starting to reach out to some of those shadow ministers who may well have resigned."

A Labour spokesman said: "There's always work to be done.

"We hope that others will rejoin the shadow cabinet and get on with the job of opposing the Government."

Jeremy Corbyn is facing a challenge to his position from former shadow cabinet minister Owen Smith.
