Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is among the 15 members who were selected by the defence ministry to carry out a comprehensive review of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to make it more relevant. The panel includes other members like eminent industrialists Anand Mahindra, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Rajya Sabha member Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Principal Economic Advisor in the Finance Ministry Sanjeev Sanyal and Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar.
MS Dhoni’s appointment in this panel comes days after he was appointed as the mentor of the Indian Cricket team for the T20 World Cup. The former India captain is a Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) in the Indian Army. Virat Kohli will lead the team in the tournament and will India’s T20I skipper once the tournament is over. He also gave an official statement on the same.
Meanwhile, this committee is formed to review the NCC to make it more relevant in changing times. The officers involved in the functioning of the system said that the panel will look towards active involvement of the NCC cadets and the betterment of the organisation as a whole.
“The terms of reference of the committee, inter-alia, broadly provide for suggesting measures which can empower NCC cadets to contribute more effectively towards nation-building and national developmental efforts in various sectors,” it said.
The NCC is the largest organisation in uniform that aims at developing character, discipline, a secular outlook and ideals of selfless service among young citizens, the ministry said in a statement.
