All five seasons of The Muppet Show are set to be released on Disney+ in February, it has been announced.

The last two seasons of Jim Henson’s beloved variety show, which aired from 1976 to 1981 on ITV, have never previously been available on home entertainment.

Announcing the news, Disney shared a statement from the show’s “star”, Kermit the Frog.

"It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more,” said the character.

“Today, I’m proud to say: ‘It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus tonight!’ And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony, I can only add: ‘Sorry, guys, but… here we go again.’”

The official Muppets Twitter account had teased the news earlier in the week, writing that fans of the theatrically inclined puppet ensemble should listen out for a “major and important Muppet announcement coming soon”.

As well as its puppet cast, which included the likes of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, the Swedish Chef, and more, The Muppet Show was also known for its high-profile guest stars.

Actors including Steve Martin, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters, Gene Kelly and Mark Hamill were just some of the names to feature alongside the non-human cast, in a series which comprised comedy skits and songs.

The series arrives on Disney+ on Friday 19 February.
