SINGAPORE — A 35-year-old man was charged on Thursday (18 February) with murdering a 34-year-old woman at the void deck of a block in Jurong East.

Zheng Xianfeng, a Chinese national, is said to have caused the death of Tham Mee Yoke between 16 February, at around 11.58pm, and 17 February, at around 1.27am, at Block 308 Jurong East Street 32, according to his charge sheet.

The document did not specify how the alleged murder was carried out.

Apart from his capital charge, Zheng faces two pending charges, one of which involves him allegedly causing hurt to the Tham with a penknife.

Zheng is said to have slashed Tham with a penknife at an open-air carpark near Block 349 Jurong East Ave 1 on 17 November last year at around 12.05am.

Separately, Zheng faces a charge under the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act 2015 for causing annoyance to a person known as Abdul Aziz Ishak at another carpark near Block 316 Jurong East Street 32. Zheng is said to have laid on the ground and shouted while drunk on 16 January at around 11.53pm.

Accused, victim knew each other

Zheng was remanded from Thursday and will return to court on 11 March for a further mention of his case.

Zheng and Tham are known to each other, according to the Singapore Police Force's (SPF) preliminary investigations.

The authorities had said earlier that it was alerted to the stabbing incident at about 11.55pm on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, officers found Tham lying motionless with multiple stab wounds at the void deck of Block 308 Jurong East Street 32. She was conveyed unconscious to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital where she was pronounced dead at about 1.30am on Wednesday.

If convicted of murder, Zheng faces the death penalty. If convicted of voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, Zheng faces a jail term of up to seven years, and/or a fine, and/or caning. For the charge under the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act 2015, he faces a maximum jail term of six months and/or a maximum fine of $1,000, if convicted.
