Myles Garrett has been suspended from the NFL indefinitely following the incident that marred the end of the match between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Both teams were also fined $250,000, while Garrett’s teammate Larry Ogunjobi and Steelers’ Maurkice Pouncey picked up smaller suspensions.

All three players have been suspended without pay.

The NFL released a statement that said:

“Garrett has been suspended without pay indefinitely – at a minimum for the remainder of the regular season and postseason – and must meet with the commissioner’s office prior to a decision on his reinstatement. He was also fined an additional amount. Garrett violated unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules, as well as fighting, removing the helmet of an opponent and using the helmet as a weapon.

“Pouncey has been suspended without pay for three games and fined an additional amount for fighting, including punching and kicking an opponent.

“Ogunjobi has been suspended without pay for one game and fined an additional amount for unnecessary roughness, specifically for shoving an opposing player to the ground during an altercation.”

Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett ripped the helmet off Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph, before striking his opponent with it as other teammates began to pile in.

The incident occurred after a hit by Garrett on Rudolph that he took exception to. The Steelers man grabbed Garrett by the helmet, with Garrett – who was ejected from the game – doing the same in reply but managing to remove Rudolph’s helmet in the process.

Commentating on the game, Joe Buck described the incident as “one of the worst things I've ever seen on a professional sports field.”

Maurkice Pouncey was one of the first Steelers to jump to Rudolph’s defence, throwing punches at Garrett as well as trying to kick him in the head when he fell to the ground.
