The Oscars red carpet serves as a platform for the big screen’s starriest names to showcase their fashion know-how to the world and Natalie Portman made sure to make a sartorial statement this year.

The actress used the moment to remind the film industry that female directors were wrongly snubbed at the 92nd ceremony in a Dior cape emblazoned with the names of the women who missed out on nominations.

Upon close inspection, the sweeping accessory is embroidered with the following monikers: Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood), Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Mati Diop (Atlantics), Lulu Wang (The Farewell) and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers).

“I wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year in my subtle way,” Portman told Los Angeles Times reporter, Amy Kaufman, on the red carpet.

Not a single female director was nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards with Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood), Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) and Sam Mendes (1917) up for the coveted gong.

Although it’s not the first time Portman has spoken out against the gender discrimination prevalent within the industry.

At the 2018 Academy Awards, the 38-year-old was famously tasked with the job of announcing the winner of the best director.

Calling out film critics for failing to recognise women, she quipped: “And now, here are the all-male nominees...” before revealing the all-male line-up.

So far, the Academy Awards has only ever recognised one female director, Kathryn Bigelow, who won the category back in 2010 for The Hurt Locker.
