Natural monopoly
When a single company is the sole provider of goods or services within a particular market often for technical or social reasons. This can often be the case in industries with high start-up and maintenance costs such as utilities or markets dealing with specific technology or unique raw materials. Governments often regulate companies with a natural monopoly to ensure they are run efficiently and consumers are treated fairly.
