NBA announces All-Star voting will start on Thursday, even without All-Star Game

There will be NBA All-Stars in 2021, even if there’s no All-Star Game on the calendar — yet.

The NBA announced on Wednesday that fan voting for the 2021 All-Stars will begin on Jan. 28 at noon ET, and run until Feb. 16 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Voting will take place on the NBA website, the NBA app and Twitter, and voters can submit one full ballot per day.

There are also five “2-for-1 Days” planned. All votes cast on those days (Jan. 30, Feb. 2, Feb. 4, Feb. 13 and Feb. 16) will count twice.

As usual, players and the media will also vote on the potential All-Stars. The fan vote will count for 50 percent, and the votes from players and the media will count for 25 percent each. The three frontcourt players and two guards from each conference with the highest calculated vote totals will become All-Stars. The results will be announced on Feb. 18, and updates will be shared on Feb. 4 and Feb. 11.

All-Star Game status could change

At the moment, the All-Star designation is just ceremonial. The NBA canceled the 2021 All-Star Game back in November, citing public health conditions. The Indiana Pacers were scheduled to host in 2021, but will instead host in 2024. In Wednesday’s announcement, the NBA said that “discussions surrounding a potential NBA All-Star Game are ongoing.”

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA and NBPA are having those discussions, and are working on a plan to make the game happen.

Wojnarowski reported that if the game happens, it’s likely to take place in Atlanta on March 7, which is during the NBA’s scheduled midseason break. All of the normal fan-focused All-Star Weekend activities would be stripped away and the game would be the main focus.
