Nets' Spencer Dinwiddie suffers partial ACL tear, will undergo surgery next week

The Brooklyn Nets will be without Spencer Dinwiddie after the guard suffered a partially torn ACL in his right knee, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported. The team confirmed the diagnosis Monday afternoon and announced he will undergo surgery next week.

There is reportedly no other structural damage. He will likely be out for the rest of the season, but is expected to make a full recovery before the start of the 2021-22 schedule, per Charania.

The injury occurred in the third quarter of the Nets’ 106-104 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. It was their first loss of the young season. Dinwiddie appeared to plant his right leg awkwardly while driving to the basket and preparing to pass it back out. He was on the floor grabbing at his knee before limping to the sideline and heading to the locker room.

Head coach Steve Nash said after the game that Dinwiddie strained the knee and would be further evaluated. The Nets (2-1) are scheduled to play the Memphis Grizzlies at home Monday night in their first back-to-back of the season.

Dinwiddie shared an update on Instagram on Monday night, and appeared to be in good spirits while recalling an earlier ACL tear he suffered in 2014.

Dinwiddie’s season cut short with Nets

Dinwiddie, 27, averaged 7.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and three assists over the first two games. He had five points, four rebounds and three assists in 15 minutes on Sunday and has a player option in 2021.

The seventh-year veteran missed the Nets’ restarted season at Disney World after he tested positive for COVID-19 in June and experienced symptoms of the virus.

He started all three games with Kyrie Irving in the back court. The Nets are one of the most exciting NBA teams to watch this season with Kevin Durant returning from an Achilles injury to wear a Nets uniform for the first time and Nash taking the head coaching duties.
