NBA postpones Grizzlies' matchup with Bulls amid their COVID-19 outbreak

Another Memphis Grizzlies game has been postponed while they deal with a COVID-19 outbreak.

The Grizzlies’ matchup with the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday was called off on Sunday night, the league announced.

The game was “postponed due to contact tracing within the Grizzlies,” and because the team wouldn’t have had enough time to prepare for the contest.

The league already postponed three Memphis games last week, calling off their Friday matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers and then back-to-back games against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday and Monday.

The Grizzlies last played on Jan. 18, when they beat the Phoenix Suns 108-104.

Wednesday’s game now marks the 21st game the league has postponed due to the coronavirus — all but one of which have come in the last two weeks.

The Washington Wizards return to action on Sunday night after a lengthy coronavirus outbreak. The team had six games postponed after seven players reportedly tested positive. The league introduced new safety protocols last week as more teams started dealing with outbreaks, which include keeping players isolated when they aren’t playing and limiting non-basketball contact at arenas.

The country is averaging more than 176,000 new cases a day over the past week, according to The New York Times, which is significantly down from nearly 260,000 cases a day at the beginning of the month. Despite that, however, the country surpassed 400,000 total deaths and recorded more than 4,000 deaths in a single day twice last week.
