NCIS has been renewed for season 19, amid uncertainty over the show's future.

Rumours over the past few months suggested that Mark Harmon wanted to leave at the end of the current season, with CBS reported to have told the star that the show would possibly be cancelled if that happened.

Mark will be returning for the new season as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, although there remains questions on how many episodes he will actually appear in, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A compromise between the star and network may be happening to ensure the show's return, with the publication reporting that it's possible Mark will appear in a reduced number of episodes.

There is no news on whether season 19 could be the final run.

However, the show looks set to add Hawaii Five-0 star Katrina Law as a new series regular.

Deadline reported back in March that Katrina will appear as NCIS REACT Special Agent Jessica Knight in the final two episodes of season 18, with the option to be promoted to the main cast should the show be renewed.
