Neighbours star Lucinda Cowden opens up about Melanie and Toadie's secret romance

Neighbours spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Neighbours will air romantic scenes between Toadie Rebecchi and Melanie Pearson this week in the UK.

Toadie (Ryan Moloney) and Melanie (Lucinda Cowden) previously explored their connection but it didn't go anywhere. Now, in new scenes airing on Channel 5, the pair will be seen hooking up in their workplace, where Melanie works as Toadie's assistant.

When Toadie is rude to Melanie in the office their colleague Mackenzie Hargreaves (Georgie Stone) grows concerned. Mackenzie doesn't realise that Toadie is being harsh as a cover-up for his romantic interest in Melanie.

"No, I had no idea. I knew I was going to be working for him but I didn't know there was a romance ahead," Lucinda explained.

When asked about why Toadie and Melanie have now decided to date, Lucida said that, after working together, the pair have realised how much they like one another and just how similar they are.

"I think through working together they've realised how much they like each other, they both like a laugh and neither is afraid to take the mickey out of themselves or each other," she shared.

As for why Toadie and Melanie want to keep their relationship a secret, she added: "I think there's two reasons… they're working on a big case that involves an office affair, and the defendant needs his legal team to be beyond reproach, so it would be a bad look if anyone found out.

"Also I think they both don't know where this affair is going and keeping it quiet means not having to justify it to anyone."

While Melanie and Toadie both enjoy sneaking around, they realise that they have to be more careful when they're almost caught by Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou).

"She doesn't want Toadie to lose the case, so understands the importance of keeping it secret, but she's loving the excitement of sneaking around," Lucinda explained when asked if keeping the relationship secret was a worry for Melanie.

Speaking about what it was like to work with Toadie actor Ryan Moloney on the storyline, Melanie praised her co-star and added that she was thankful that COVID restrictions in Australia have eased enough to allow the actors to have physical contact in the scenes too.

"I love working with Ryan, He's funny and generous and a really talented and professional actor, and we both felt pretty comfortable with each other and just enjoyed playing the comedy together," she shared.

"We still weren't allowed to kiss but at least we could touch each other, as long as we sanitised afterwards."

In terms of her future on Neighbours, Lucinda explained that while she's still popping in and out of the show for the time being, she hopes to stay on the show for a long time.

"Still popping at the moment, with fingers crossed for a more permanent pop!" she said.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
