Net Migration Figures Up By 100,000 In A Year

Net migration has risen by more than 100,000 in a year hitting 318,000 - a near-record level, figures show.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics will come as a significant blow to David Cameron's continued pledge to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands.

They exceed his target by three times - more than 200,000 higher than his promise.

The rise of 109,000 in a year is described as "statistically significant" and comes as Mr Cameron is preparing to attempt to renegotiate Britain's deal with the EU to help stem the flow of immigrants to the UK.

Around 40% of those coming to the UK are from the EU.
