Netflix will amend a map seen in new documentary series The Devil Next Door, following a complaint from the prime minister of Poland.

The documentary focusses on the trial of John Demjanjuk, a retired auto plant worker living in the US who was later accused of being a notorious death camp guard known as Ivan The Terrible during World War II.

Mateusz Morawiecki wrote a strongly-worded letter to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings – also copying the missive to Facebook – objecting to the positioning of Nazi extermination camps during World War II on a map of Europe.

He noted that the film 'falsely places several German Nazi concentration camps in modern-day Poland’s borders', without specifically denoting that they were under Nazi control.

Morawiecki accused the series of 'rewriting history'.

“As my country did not even exist at that time as an independent state, and millions of Poles were murdered at these sites, this element of The Devil Next Door is nothing short of rewriting history,” he added.

In a statement from Netflix issued to Variety, the studio said: “We are hugely proud of The Devil Next Door and stand by its filmmakers, their research and their work.

“In order to provide more information to our members about the important issues raised in this documentary and to avoid any misunderstanding, in the coming days we will be adding text to some of the maps featured in the series.

“This will make it clearer that the extermination and concentration camps in Poland were built and operated by the German Nazi regime, [which] invaded the country and occupied it from 1939 -1945.”

A source added to Variety that the studio acknowledged that the issued needed clarifying, had while it had not made 'a direct concession' to Mr. Morawiecki, it accepted that notating the map was the best way to address the issue.

The Devil Next Door is streaming now on Netflix.
