Yahoo Finance Netflix has dropped a new trailer for Ryan Murphy's The Prom
Ryan Murphy is on a roll right now. Following The Politician, Hollywood and Ratched, the mega producer is bringing us yet another Netflix TV gem as part of his deal with the streaming giant. The film, titled The Prom, is an adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical and features a massive cast, including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Andrew Rannells, Keegan-Michael Key and more.
What's The Prom about?
The movie tells the story of four Broadway actors who decide they want to champion a cause to improve their reputations. Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) are out of work after the expensive musical they're starring in shuts down after just one night, and their careers come to a standstill. They join up with fellow Broadway stars Angie Dickson (Nicole Kidman) and Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells) and end up traveling to Indiana to help high school student Emma after they hear that her prom was cancelled because she wanted to go with her girlfriend.

Um, everyone! Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells and Ariana DeBose, who replaced Ariana Grande, all star. Newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman plays high school student Emma.
When is The Prom being released on Netflix?
It was originally scheduled to drop earlier this year, but was pushed back due to the pandemic. Confirming the new release date in September, Ryan Murphy announced The Prom will land on the streaming platform on December 11th.
What has Ryan Murphy said about The Prom?
Asked about the moment he decided he was going to turn it into a film, Ryan recalled going to see the musical in January 2019. "I thought it was funny and stylish and it felt like a relief in the middle of a very dark time in our country," he shared. "I also loved that when I looked around, there were families there. There were parents with their kids. There were gay people there. There were straight women there who had come in groups. It played for everybody. I just loved that people were laughing and crying. There was a great humanity and spirit to it."
The producer also admitted he was terrified to direct Meryl Streep for the first time. "The idea that I had to suck it up and say, 'Let’s try it again,' was terrifying. Then I found out she wants to be directed. She wants to try this and do that. But that was terrifying."
Is there a trailer for The Prom?
Oh yes there is! Netflix has treated us to two trailers, and they're both epic. "My name is Emma Nolan and I'm 17. You might have heard about the prom in Indiana. I know we all have stories to tell... And here's mine," starts the second trailer before it flashes to Dee Dee, Barry and Angie making it their mission to help the teen.
Yes, The Prom is absolutely the feel-good film 2020 deserves.
