Network Rail has issued a stark warning after pictures revealed people taking part in a photoshoot on live train tracks.

The woman in the photos can be seen strolling up and down the tracks and even sitting on them while a man sets up a camera angle to the side.

The shocking scenes were captured at a level crossing on the line between Cardiff and Swansea, where trains travel up to 85 mph.

Network Rail cameras caught the trespassers taking the photos, and have now released them to the public to raise awareness about safety on the railway.

According to a spokesman, the incident captured could have resulted in "fatal or life changing consequence”.

Ronnie Gallagher, from Network Rail, said: "We have noticed a significant increase in use at public footpaths since the introduction of COVID-19 restrictions.

"People have been walking longer distances and many will be using level crossings for the first time.

"It is important that you concentrate, follow the instructions and only cross when there are no trains approaching.”

This is not the first incidence of people stopping to take photos on level crossings.

In August, a man was seen taking pictures of a young girl on a crossing in East Yorkshire, while another image showed a group of cyclists dismounting their bikes and lining up for a group photo.

The organisation said at the time: "Network Rail advises that at any level crossing with facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to cross, they must do so quickly and without stopping after they have checked it is safe to do so.

"Most crossings have warning lights that indicate when a train is approaching even when the gates are still open."
