  • The Newport Marathon is the latest spring event to be postponed until autumn owing to the ongoing pandemic

  • The event was due to take place on Sunday, April 18, but has been delayed until Sunday, October 24

The ABP Newport Wales Marathon and 10K, which have already been postponed once because of Covid-19, have now been rescheduled for October.

In a press release, Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said organisers had made the difficult decision as they felt it would ‘not be possible to safely deliver the event’ in April.

The statement reads, ‘As 2020 drew to a close, the vaccine rollout in the UK gave us reason to be optimistic and look forward to the safe return of outdoor events in early spring. It is now clear, however, against a backdrop of strict lockdown restrictions and the emergence of a more transmissible variant of the virus, it will not be possible to safely deliver the event in three months’ time. The marathon and 10K races will have to be delayed until 24 October, 2021.

‘We recognise the frustration surrounding a further delay to the event and the time and considerable effort that goes into marathon training, but have no choice in having to wait until the public health context improves. The health and safety of our runners, volunteers, and event staff remains our top priority.’

Runners have been reacting to the news on social media:

Runners with a place in the marathon, 10K or family mile have been emailed about the rescheduled event. More information regarding the cancellation can be found on the race website.
