Yahoo Finance 'Grinch' NFL comes to collect: Alvin Kamara fined $5K for Christmas Day cleats
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is hearing from the NFL after his cleat show on Christmas Day.
The NFL fined Kamara $5,000 for wearing one red cleat and one green cleat during his six-touchdown day against the Minnesota Vikings, NFL Media reported. He became the first player to score six in a game since Gale Sayers did it in 1965 with the Chicago Bears. The Saints also clinched the NFC South division title in the Christmas matinee.
It’s a historic feat that usually results in a piece of game-worn apparel — commonly cleats — being sent to the Hall of Fame and shown to visitors. Awkwardly enough, the NFL is imposing a fine on that exact thing even though the league allowed Kamara to wear the cleats the entire game because they didn’t pose a safety risk.
Teammate Cam Jordan had the winning idea after the game if the Hall asks for the cleats. Via Saints Wire:
“Well, when the Hall of Fame calls to come get the cleats, now he’s just got to charge them,” Jordan smirked, “So he can break even.”
Kamara knew a fine could be handed down and fittingly referenced it after the game.
“Oh, they’re probably going to fine me,” Kamara shrugged during his postgame media availability. “If they fine me, whatever it is, I’ll just match it and donate it to charity. You know that the Grinch always tries to steal Christmas.”
Fines are put into foundations that benefit former players. Kamara signed a five-year, $75 million extension with the Saints in September. Saints fans and over-the-moon fantasy football players donated $21,000 to charity in honor of his performance.
