Raiders help Detroit win free beer instead of Denver by blocking 2 Broncos FGs in Week 17

The city of Denver could have been toasting the new year with free beer if it weren’t for those meddling Las Vegas Raiders.

First, the set up. Way back in July, Bud Light announced that whoever kicked the longer field goal between Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManus and the Detroit Lions’ Matt Prater would win free beer for their respective city.

The competition by Bud Light started with McManus, whose career long coming into the season was 57 yards in 2015. The company said it would purchase beer for Denver if he broke the record for longest field goal in NFL history.

That mark is held by Prater, who hit a 64-yarder while with Denver in 2013. When Prater asked what happens if he breaks his own record, Bud Light opened the contest up to both cities.

Prater came into Week 17 with the longer kick. He hit a 59-yarder as time expired to beat the Washington Football Team in Week 10. Against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday he made a 54-yard kick, his only attempt of the game.

McManus had two opportunities later in the day to beat the mark — his long was a career-best 58 yards at home against the New Orleans Saints — but this is where the Raiders come into play.

With time expiring in the first half, Broncos coach Vic Fangio sent McManus out for a stunning 70-yard field goal attempt. Given the distance needed on it, the kick was unsurprisingly blocked.

McManus came out again, the Broncos down by one point, to attempt a 63-yard field goal with nine seconds left. That one was also blocked by Maxx Crosby.

Maybe Detroit drinkers should toast to Crosby with their free beer.

Lions’ Prater reaches career field goal milestone

Prater finished his 14th NFL season with 21 made field goals in 28 attempts. He’s made 59 field goals of 50 yards or more over his career, breaking the record set by Sebastian Janikowski.

Prater is set to become a free agent in March. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler whose best season came in 2013 with the Broncos. He made all 75 point-after attempts and made 96.2 percent of his field goals (25 of 26). He’s made at least seven kicks of at least 50 yards in three different seasons, all of which were with the Lions.
