An NHS worker was punched in the head and bundled off a Tube train for confronting three passengers refusing to wear face masks.

An argument erupted on the Circle line when he asked why the two men and a woman were breaching Covid-19 restrictions.

One of the men struck the victim several times in the side of the head before throwing him off the train onto the platform at High Street Kensington station at 10pm on October 3.

The group stayed on the service as it departed.

The victim suffered serious injuries, including a chipped jaw and three breaks to his eye socket.

British Transport Police today issued an image of a man, wearing a suit and holding an umbrella, they believe may have information which could assist their investigation.

Figures released to the BBC yesterday show almost 500 people have been fined in London for not wearing face coverings on public transport.

Passengers in Lambeth - which includes Waterloo Station - were the most common rulebreakers.

Enforcement officers had also stopped about 113,000 people from getting on public transport services until they put on a face mask, while 1,800 were removed from services.

Anyone who recognises the man or has information can contact BTP by texting 61016, or call 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 2000068891.

Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
