Nick Saban 'feeling fine' after COVID-19 bout, hopeful to return for LSU game

After being sidelined with COVID-19, Nick Saban said he fully expects to return to the field with No. 1 Alabama on Saturday for their matchup with LSU.

Saban — who missed the Crimson Tide’s 42-13 win against No. 22 Auburn on Saturday after contracting the coronavirus — insisted on Monday that he’s healthy and good to go.

“I’m feeling fine, so you don’t need to worry about me,” Saban said. “Just to be clear, I’ll be evaluated by the medical staff later in the week and they’ll make a determination as to when I can come back. But I don’t anticipate any problems in being able to coach the game this week.”

Saban tested positive for coronavirus, had ‘mild’ symptoms

Saban and the Crimson Tide announced last week that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and that he was experiencing mild symptoms. He said that he had a runny nose, but didn’t have a fever and had no idea where he picked up the virus.

The 69-year-old coach had tested positive previously in October, though was asymptomatic and was quickly determined to have returned a false positive test.

Saban has yet to be cleared officially to return to coach the Crimson Tide, but appears more than ready to get back out there in time for the matchup — which was rescheduled after coronavirus issues within the LSU program.

The Tigers and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow knocked off Alabama last season 46-41 in Tuscaloosa. LSU, however, has struggled this season and is fresh off a 20-7 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M.

Saban is just the latest to be impacted by the coronavirus so far this season. Michigan paused team activities on Monday due to “an increased number of presumptive positives,” joining both Minnesota and Ohio State in the Big Ten. There have already been five games for Week 14 that have been rescheduled or canceled, and both the ACC and Pac-12 quickly rearranged schedules on Sunday to save games next weekend.
