‘Nightmare’ – Shearer slams five ‘unacceptable’ Liverpool players who were ‘punished’ by Wolves
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was very unimpressed by Liverpool during their 3-0 defeat at Wolves on Saturday.
It was another woeful afternoon for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are currently 10th in the Premier League, 11 points off the bottom three and 21 behind first-placed Arsenal.
This season has been extremely poor, especially considering Liverpool reached the final of three different competitions last term.
The loss at Molineux was full of inexcusable performances and Klopp must be wondering what he needs to do to turn things around.
Shearer picked out Joel Matip, who “had a nightmare”, while also criticising Andy Robertson, Naby Keita, Thiago, and Joe Gomez.
Chances of qualifying for the Champions League are hanging by a thread and the German manager is going through his most difficult period in charge of the Anfield club.
Shearer refused to hold back in his criticism of Liverpool. He said on Match of the Day: “You have time to pick your pass, no pressure on the ball, it’s too easy.
“Gomez is out of position. Look at Matip, you have time to pick your pass and put it in behind. Matip stops. I mean, he is on his way over there to close them and he stops. I don’t know what he’s doing. He had a nightmare.
“Then, all of a sudden (the ball is in the back of the net for the opening goal) and it’s a little bit unlucky with that (the ball hitting him and going in). But again, one simple pass out.
“They have gone past the three midfielders. You are in the back four, into the final third, causing them problems.
“This is the second goal, ball in. No closing down. Why doesn’t Robertson close them down?! Which he should do. Why doesn’t Keita close them down?! Then, you can take a touch and put the ball in the middle and you get punished. 2-0 down after 11 or 12 minutes.”
Shearer added: “Matip, again. Not acceptable. Not good enough.
“That should be in the back of the net (Matheus Nunes’ chance) – when the ball goes through (for Wolves’ third goal), the reaction or lack of reaction from Thiago when he’s chasing Neves. He can see Neves, but he doesn’t even try to stop him. It’s a brilliant goal from Wolves.”
Liverpool host Everton in the Merseyside derby next, and will face their city rivals at the worst possible time.
The Toffees are on a high after beating league leaders Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, in what was Sean Dyche’s first match in charge after replacing Frank Lampard.
Liverpool have really struggled to keep players fit this season and are paying the price.
Klopp has used several different defensive partnerships with Virgil van Dijk currently out injured.
Gomez has been very poor this term after struggling for game time in 2021-22, while Trent Alexander-Arnold has been exposed too many times.
The Reds’ poor form doesn’t look like it will come to an end any time soon and with Real Madrid coming up in the Champions League shortly, they will need to buck up their ideas as soon as possible.
