Scammers. We all hate them but, sometimes, we can’t avoid them. That’s especially true in the sneaker resale market, where scammers can sell knockoff sneakers for triple or quadruple their worth. According to GQ, counterfeit sneakers are a $450 billion market, and it’s one that involves a whole lot of scheming and canoodling. Nikes and Adidas are commonly counterfeited, making it difficult for the unsuspecting customer to figure out whether what they’re buying is the real deal.
So what’s the best way to avoid scammers online? Avoid the internet, says Racks Hogan, host of “The Flip.”
“My personal advice is until you’ve got your bearings and you have enough information and you feel confident enough in the person you’re making a purchase from, stay away from the internet,” he says on the the show’s most recent episode. “Don’t make no purchase on the internet.”
That advice especially holds true for sneaker fans who are looking to snag a pair of highly coveted kicks. Because those sneakers are already in high demand and in limited quantity, it can be difficult to tell whether those that are in the resale market are actually authentic.
Speaking of sneakers that are commanding attention, let’s get to this week’s upcoming drops.
Shop: Nike Air Raid “Urban Jungle Gym”
Released in 1993, the Nike Air Raid “Urban Jungle Gym” has a multi-colored midsole pattern that pays tribute to Spike Lee’s “Live Together, Play Together” campaign. The sneaker also consists of a black cross strap, black and dark gray nubuck and a colorful fabric tongue.
But the sneaker isn’t exactly expected to be a hit in the resale market, Hogan notes. Its retail price is $140, yet it’s unlikely to fetch anything over that if resold.
Shop: Air Jordan 3 Retro “Court Purple”
According to sneaker blog Kicks on Fire, the Air Jordan 3 Retro “Court Purple” is supposedly part of the Jordan Brand’s holiday 2020 collection. It features black tumbled leather, along with a purple midsole, Jumpman logo, eyelets and ankle. It also has the signature elephant print across the toe and heel.
Like the Nike Air Raid, Hogan doesn’t expect the “Court Purple” to make a splash in the resale market unfortunately. The sneaker’s MSRP is $190, and its price will probably stay that way.
Shop: Peaceminusone x Nike Air Force 1 Para-Noise 2.0
But not all is lost, fellow sneaker lovers. The Peaceminusone x Nike Air Force 1 Para-Noise 2.0 is the crème de la crème of this week’s crop of kicks. Inspired by Korean rapper G-Dragon, the sneaker has a peel-away covering on the upper that reveals hidden artwork. It also has a black tumbled leather Swoosh on each side of the sneaker and an embroidered daisy on its tongue.
The sneaker retails for $200, but Hogan expects it to make way much more in the resale market. So if you can get your hands on a pair, definitely do so.
