HMD Global has announced a string of new Nokia smartphones, including one with a five camera lens system which the firm says is the first for a phone.

The new Nokia 9 PureView combines two colour cameras with three monochrome sensors, all of which come with optics technology from camera firm Zeiss.

The array of cameras,  each 12 megapixels, provides more control over depth-of-focus and lets users capture details within an image that would otherwise be hidden.

The $699 (£534) smartphone is able to capture up to ten times as much light as other devices and can produce photos with up to 240-megapixel resolution.

The PureView was one of five phones unveiled by the company ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona.

That range included three other Android smartphones as well as the new Nokia 210 feature phone, a basic mobile phone aimed at users in developing countries.

Florian Seiche, chief executive of HMD Global, HMD Global Oy, which produces consumer products under the Nokia name, claimed that these smartphones take a "leap forward", despite not offering 5G connectivity.

These kinds of low-cost handsets have helped HMD Global gain unicorn status with a $1bn (£750m) valuation in early 2018, buoyed by the demand from nostalgic consumers for the brand.

Premium device makers have been trying to develop ways to excite consumers into upgrading their phones more frequently, but high prices, minimal aesthetic differentiation between models, as well as strong competition from Chinese manufacturers, have made this difficult over the past year.

Seiche wouldn’t say whether the company was preparing a model with 5G connectivity, as seen on devices announced recently by Samsung, and Xiaomi Corp, but said HMD was collaborating with Qualcomm Inc. on 5G technologies.

Meanwhile smartphone manufacturing giants Samsung,Huawei and China's Xiaomi have all unveiled 5G enabled devices ahead of an expected roll-out of the high speed connectivity in major markets including the UK.

Foldable phones have also dominated the agenda at the industry event, with both Samsung and Huawei launching expensive folding handsets costing $2,600 (£1,991) and $1,980 (£1516) respectively.
