With the customary Christmas mad dash for last minute everything is now upon us, it may be helpful to know that there is still plenty of genuine treasure out there. And a fail-safe place to discover them will be The Fine Art Society, which is hosting a beautiful selling exhibition of Danish silversmith Georg Jensen.

Nearly an entire century after Jensen’s debut exhibition in the UK in 1921, Nordic Design is a glorious display right in the heart of Mayfair, with more than 130 collectable pieces by a selection of Nordic designers and makers, 71 of them designed and realised by Jensen himself.

The work of this great, minimalist Dane naturally takes centre stage. An opportunity for collectors andenthusiasts to acquire these sought after works is very rare: suffice to say Georg Jensen’s two previous exhibitions with the Fine Art Society in 1921 and 1923 were near sell-outs, the silversmith’s modernist Scandinavian sensibility proving extremely popular in post-war Britain. Today, now that the Georg Jensen jewellery brand has a global reputation for quality, craftsmanship and timeless style, the buzz is louder than ever.

Having held over 3,000 exhibitions in the 141 years since it was established on New Bond Street, Nordic Design might appear like a departure from what the Fine Art Society is known for. But its previous partnerships with Georg Jensen made it the most logical first port of call when one of their clients wanted to sell their collection.

A silver spoon produced the same year the gallery first hosted the his work, is one of the first pieces visitors will see on entering the gallery. Silver and teak feature highly in the display, with jewellery and precious homewares by Nanna Ditzel, Hans Hansen, and Tapio Wirkkala, alongside furniture by Hans Wegner, Philip Arctander, and Kurt Østervig.

Keep an eye out in particular for a rare pair of 1940s sheepskin and beechwood clam chairs by Danish architect Philip Arctander, and a fabulous drinks cabinet and stools by naval architect Østervig.

Nordic Design is on until 3 January 2018 at The Fine Art Society, 148 New Bond Street, London, W1S 2JT; fineartsociety
