Normal People breakout star Paul Mescal has secured himself a role in Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter.

It's currently unclear which character he'll be playing, but the 24-year-old joins Oscar winner Olivia Colman, Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson, The Batman star Peter Sarsgaard and Chernobyl's Jessie Buckley in the cast.

Mescal himself reacted to the news on Twitter yesterday (August 28), retweeting The Hollywood Reporter's original article with the caption: "I'm a very excited boy!"

Based on the 2006 book by Elena Ferrante, The Lost Daughter focuses on Colman's character, a college professor who becomes engrossed by a young mother and her daughter while on holiday, bringing back her own difficult memories of early motherhood.

Here, she starts to crumble while forced to reflect on the choices she made as a young parent.

Elsewhere, despite the show's incredible popularity, the Normal People actor revealed that a second season wasn't "on the cards".

"I do feel like the series that has finished is its own thing, and I'm totally comfortable with that. It's not on the cards at the moment, but if I got the opportunity to play him again, amazing," Mescal commented.

The Lost Daughter awaits an official release date, while Normal People is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
