North Division champ will win free beer for their entire city
With the Stanley Cup playoffs in the North Division starting Wednesday night, Budweiser has thrown in an extra incentive for the winning team.
The Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets will start off the North Division playoffs Wednesday, while the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens play their first game Thursday. The winning team from each series will play each other in the second round, and the city that comes out on top will be given a 24-foot goal light and a $5 voucher for beer that fans of drinking age will be able to sign up for online.
So what's the outlook for each market hoping to celebrate the big victory with a few cold ones on the house?
The Leafs finished off the regular season 35-14-7, clinching the top seed in the Canadian division. Toronto will be facing the Habs, who claimed the fourth spot with a 24-21-11 record this year. During the regular season, the Leafs won seven out of 10 games, however, Toronto has been eliminated four straight years in the first round.
The last time these two teams were matched up in the playoffs was in 1979 when the Habs came out of the series with a win en route to a Stanley Cup.
The Oilers finished as the second seed in the division, going 35-19-2 in the regular season compared to the Jets who ended up in the third spot with a 30-23-3 record. This season, the Oilers won seven out of the nine games against the Jets.
The last time the two teams faced off in a playoff scenario was in 1990 when the Oilers erased a 3-1 series deficit, making that the sixth time that they had eliminated the Jets in the playoffs.
