Looking for a new endurance challenge? Entries are now open for a new luxury ultramarathon race which costs more than £15,000 per runner.

Highland Kings is described by organisers Primal Adventures as ‘the world’s first premium ultra’ and ‘a new age of ultra-endurance experiencel’. Set in the ruggedly beautiful surroundings of Scotland’s west coast, the four-day race is set to take place from April 25-29, 2022.

The route consists of four stages covering 120 miles and 10,000ft of ascent. Beginning at Dalness, north west of Glasgow, will take in the West Highland Way, Loch Shira and Loch Fyne, before coming to an end on the Isle of Arran. Some stages of the route will be relatively smooth, while the final stage involves rough terrain and steep rocky climbs.

According to the event’s website, just 40 runners will be taking part. From October 2021 through to April 2022, entrants will receive personalised coaching from Jon Albon, a previous Trail World Championships gold medallist, and Anna-Marie Watson, an endurance athlete and former British Army operative.

Matt Smith, a former Special Forces operative who is part of the team behind Highland Kings, told newspaper CityAM: ‘The programs are individually designed around a participant’s psychological condition and developmental needs.’

‘The event will be a true physical challenge for athletes, [but] will deliver comfort and luxury rarely associated with endurance events,’ he said.

Alongside coaching, entrants will reportedly also receive luxury gear from the event’s partners, including a personalised Garmin MARQ watch, waterproof kit from Thrudark and a race vest from Ultimate Direction.

But the race is not just for elite endurance athletes already at the top of their game, organisers say. ‘Our team will support you every step of the way from sign-up through to April 2022,’ the website says. ‘While the challenge may be four days, we’ll help you progress mentally and physically for seven months in the lead-up. If you can jog for 30 minutes, complete a local parkrun or cycle for an hour, we’re confident you can become a Highland King.’

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the record-breaking British adventurer and explorer, is also an ambassador for the event. Participants will have the chance to meet Fiennes and hear stories from his career at an event on the final night of the race. According to the website, Fiennes describes the event as a ‘pioneering Ultra,’ that will ‘deliver a unique luxury, endurance and immersive wilderness experience.’
