Is Now The Time To Put Calnex Solutions (LON:CLX) On Your Watchlist?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Calnex Solutions (LON:CLX). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Quickly Is Calnex Solutions Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. We can see that in the last three years Calnex Solutions grew its EPS by 14% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

Calnex Solutions shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 21% to 27%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Calnex Solutions isn't a huge company, given its market capitalisation of UK£130m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Calnex Solutions Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that Calnex Solutions insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they hold UK£31m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Those holdings account for over 24% of the company; visible skin in the game.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Calnex Solutions, with market caps under UK£175m is around UK£299k.

Calnex Solutions offered total compensation worth UK£255k to its CEO in the year to March 2022. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Should You Add Calnex Solutions To Your Watchlist?
