Is Now The Time To Put Serco Group (LON:SRP) On Your Watchlist?

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Serco Group (LON:SRP), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Serco Group's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Serco Group has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, Serco Group's EPS shot from UK£0.10 to UK£0.24, over the last year. You don't see 142% year-on-year growth like that, very often.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Serco Group's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 18% to UK£4.2b. That's progress.

While we live in the present moment at all times, there's no doubt in my mind that the future matters more than the past. So why not check this interactive chart depicting future EPS estimates, for Serco Group?

Are Serco Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

We haven't seen any insiders selling Serco Group shares, in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Roy Gardner bought UK£29k worth of shares at an average price of around UK£1.17.

Is Serco Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Serco Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. Growth investors should find it difficult to look past that strong EPS move. And in fact, it could well signal a fundamental shift in the business economics. If that's the case, you may regret neglecting to put Serco Group on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that Serco Group is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...

The good news is that Serco Group is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
