Oil leaks from BP Whiting refinery into nearby Lake Michigan
NEW YORK (Frankfurt: HX6.F - news) , March 25 (Reuters) - An unknown volume of oil leaked from BP Plc (LSE: BP.L - news) 's Whiting, Indiana, refinery into nearby Lake Michigan on Monday afternoon, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management confirmed on Tuesday.
The leak started from a cooling water outfall at the refinery at 5:30 p.m. EDT (2130 GMT) on Monday afternoon, said Dan Goldblatt, a public information officer with the department.
The leak was contained as of early Tuesday morning (Frankfurt: TDM.F - news) and officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Indiana environmental regulator were on site, Goldblatt said. (Reporting by Selam Gebrekidan)
