Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham sprains ankle in loss to Baylor, questionable for finale

Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham sprained his ankle in the 81-70 loss to No. 3 Baylor on Thursday night and is questionable for the regular season finale, according to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

Cunningham, who is widely considered a top lottery pick in this year’s NBA draft, is set to undergo treatment and be evaluated on Friday before the Cowboys take on No. 6 West Virginia on Saturday.

Cunningham went down in the final minute of No. 17 Oklahoma State’s game in Waco on Thursday night as he was dribbling up the left side of the court and stepped on the foot of Baylor’s Davion Mitchell.

Cunningham, clearly in pain, eventually was helped off to the sidelines and didn’t return.

“It happened right in front of me there,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said, via ESPN. “I didn’t see anything unusual other than stepping on a guy’s foot. We’ll get an evaluation, and as soon as we know more, we’ll pass it on.”

Cunningham finished the night with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He’s averaged 19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists so far this season, his first with the Cowboys.

Thursday’s loss snapped a five game win streak for Oklahoma State, which included back-to-back wins against No. 16 Oklahoma and a huge win over No. 18 Texas Tech. Though his presence would undoubtedly be helpful against West Virginia on Saturday, Boynton could easily elect to sit Cunningham to ensure his health for the Big 12 tournament next week and the NCAA tournament.

And, of course, his status in the NBA draft is on Boynton’s mind, too — as Yahoo Sports’ Krysten Peek had Cunningham going No. 1 overall in her latest mock draft.

"I'm always first and foremost worried about his future," Boynton said, via ESPN. “As much as winning and representing our program is, my commitment to these kids is always first. So I want to make sure he's OK.

“If he's OK, he'll continue to work with us. If it's anything more serious than it feels right now, then we'll evaluate how we move forward."
