The One Show suffers "technical difficulties" during Shakira interview

It's been the bane of pandemic times, and it happened once again on The One Show on Friday (July 23) – those infamous Zoom freezes. Only this time, it resulted in a global superstar being totally cut off mid-sentence. Awkward.

It all went down when Alex Jones and Ronan Keating were trying to chat with singer Shakira and DJ extraordinaire Mark Ronson, who were both checking in via separate video calls.

While Mark was able to chat about the Olympics with the hosts and in-studio guest Alan Davies, Ronan asked Shakira through the screen what her Olympic sport would be. But got no response.

The hosts then realised Shakira couldn't actually see or hear them. "Oh, I thought she was just looking gorgeous, but she's frozen," Alex said after a pretty awkward couple of seconds, as Ronan joked her sport would be "staying still".

The two rescued the moment by turning back to chat to Alan as Shakira's frozen face disappeared from the screen behind them.

Unfortunately, they didn't fair any better a few minutes later when they returned to chat to the two virtually again.

Shakira's connection worked for a few minutes as she listened in to the twosome's chat with Mark, but as soon as it came time to speak again, you guessed it, she froze once again. Alex then pointed out the singer was able to hear them as she tried to conduct the interview by voice only.

"Let's see how this works," she teased. Only, this being live TV, it didn't. The show cut to a clip of Shakira's new music video for 'Don't Wake Up', and once again returned to show the two in studio without Shakira behind them.

The hosts instead spoke to Mark a little more as Ronan confirmed the star was still having "technical difficulties".

After the chat, Ronan reiterated, "We're actually trying to get Shakira back. A couple of technical difficulties. We're hoping to have her back soon."

Fortunately, she did eventually work through the issues and returned just in time to say a little about her musical comeback during the final few seconds of the show. "I can actually hear you!" a very excited Shakira said.

Shakira's appearance ended up being so brief that Alex actually had to cut her off because the show was literally seconds from ending.

"Shakira, we're going to have to stop you there!" Alex interjected as the star was clearly still speaking, joking, "Well that was a race to the finish, wasn't it?"

That's live TV for you.

The One Show airs on BBC One.
