Ontario reports close to 4,500 new COVID-19 cases over two days, including single-day record

Ontario reported 2,553 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, a single-day record, in addition to 1,939 cases reported on Monday, totalling 4,492 cases over the past two days.

On Tuesday, there were 895 new cases reported in Toronto, 496 in Peel, 147 in Windsor-Essex County, 144 in Hamilton and 142 in York Region.

There were 34,112 tests completed on Monday and 39,565 test competed on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the province confirmed 41 more deaths. There are currently 864 people with COVID-19 in Ontario hospitals, including 304 people in ICUs.

In Ontario, 194 long-term care homes are reporting an outbreak. There are 1,145 active resident cases in the province and 1,032 active staff cases.

There are now 117 confirmed resident COVID-19 cases in the Tendercare Living Centre in the Scarborough area of Toronto, after North York General Hospital took control of the long-term care home on Christmas Day. On Monday, the hospital confirmed that 43 staff at the facility have COVID-19 and are in isolation at home.
