Ontario sees record COVID-19 case count over 2,900, more than 1,100 people in hospitals

Ontario reported a record 2,923 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, including 998 new cases in Toronto, 441 in Peel, 408 in York Region, 158 in Durham and 144 in Windsor-Essex County.

This comes after the province’s previous record of 2,553 cases was reported on Tuesday.

Ontario completed 39,200 tests in the last day with 54,955 currently under investigation. The test positivity in the province is now 8.6 per cent.

Ontario also confirmed 19 more COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total to 4,474.

The number of people in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19 has now jumped above 1,000, totalling 1,177. This includes 323 people in ICUs.

There are 192 long-term care homes that have a reported COVID-19 outbreak, which includes 1,188 active resident cases and 1,057 active staff cases.

There have been 111 confirmed resident COVID-19 cases in the Tendercare Living Centre in the Scarborough area of Toronto, and 59 staff cases. There have also been 48 COVID-19 related deaths at the long-term care home.

On Tuesday, North York General Hospital (NYGH) confirmed 101 active resident cases in the facility and 53 staff cases, who are in isolation at home.

People demonstrated outside Tendercare Living Centre on Tuesday, calling on the provincial government to take more action to help this facility battle the COVID-19 pandemic.
