Oregon starting QB Tyler Shough to transfer

Oregon will have a new starting quarterback in 2021.

The Ducks were expecting to have Tyler Shough back for a second season as starter. But Shough announced Friday that he would be transferring from Oregon. He's graduating from the school early and will have three seasons of eligibility at his next school.

Shough started all seven games for Oregon in 2020 after serving as Justin Herbert's backup in 2019.

Shough was 106-of-167 passing for 1,559 yards and 13 TDs and six interceptions in 2020. While he started each of Oregon’s games in 2020, he took a back seat to Boston College transfer Anthony Brown in the Ducks’ Fiesta Bowl loss to Iowa State.

Shough was 7-of 9 passing for 79 yards and an interception against the Cyclones while Brown was 12-of-19 for 147 yards and also rushed four times for 36 yards and two touchdowns in the 34-17 loss.

Brown served as Shough’s backup for most of the season but saw his first playing time in the Pac-12 championship against USC.

Shough, a native of Arizona, redshirted in 2018. He was a four-star recruit in the class of 2018 and ranked as Rivals' No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the class. Per Rivals, Oregon was one of 24 schools that offered Shough a scholarship.

Brown now Oregon's presumptive starter

Brown announced in January that he was returning to Oregon for his extra season of eligibility. Without Shough on the roster, Brown now enters the spring and fall as Oregon's likely starter.

Brown transferred to Oregon after an injury-shortened 2019 season where he played just six games. In those six games, he was 81-of-137 passing for 1,250 yards and nine touchdowns to two interceptions.

Oregon should enter the season as the favorite in the Pac-12 thanks to all the talent that is still returning on the roster. We ranked the Ducks at No. 10 in our way-too-early top 25 ahead of the 2021 season in January.
