The second season of Netflix's Outer Banks dropped onto the streaming platform on July 30 and we're already yearning for season 3.. but wait – will there even be one?
Outer Banks follows a tight-knit group of friends in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The group of teens engage in a treasure hunt after main character John B enlists his three best friends to hunt for legendary treasure linked to his father's disappearance. The treasure in question happens to be $400 million worth of gold.
Here's all we know about season 3 of the hit Netflix show...
Outer Banks has yet to be renewed for season 3
Although it hasn't been confirmed yet, the chances of Netflix renewing Outer Banks for a third season are pretty high. Especially considering that season 2 hit number one on Netflix's 'Top 10' list as soon as it dropped onto the platform on July 30.
Netflix usually renews shows a couple of months after their release. Which definitely rings true, as Outer Banks season 2 wasn't confirmed until July last year – three months after season 1 came out in April 2020.
If we go by Netflix's usual timeline for these things, Outer Banks season 3 will most likely be confirmed this autumn with the new season dropping onto Netflix one year later in the autumn of 2022.
What about subsequent seasons?
Speaking to Cosmopolitan UK, Chase Stokes, who plays John B revealed, "I would love to keep it going. But obviously it just comes down to people’s reactions to it.
"Hopefully, just like last year, people really attach to the story and fall in love with the journey of not just The Pogues but the entire world of Outer Banks. All of these characters have something super interesting to offer."
The main cast will probably return for season 3
The Pogues make it out of Season 2 alive, washed up on an unknown island, so it's very likely that Madelyn Cline (Sarah), Chase Stokes (John B), Madison Bailey (Kiara), Jonathan Daviss (Pope), and Rudy Pankow (J.J.) will all be back in Season 3.
The treasure hunt could continue
The Season 2 finale ends with the Pogues stranded on Poguelandia after losing a fortune for a second time. Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke from the behind-the-scenes team told Entertainment Weekly that they're not going to give up on the fortune that easily.
Speaking to EW Josh Pate said "[The treasure] has to become a bigger mystery across the series. And so the treasure hunt is going to expand, and the mythology around the treasure hunt is going to evolve and get deeper. We're pretty fired up about how that mythology is going to expand in season 3. We've been reading a lot of books, and we got some good things to hang it on,"
Other characters will have bigger parts in future seasons
Season 2 of Outer Banks expanded the story from its original focus on John B and Sarah, which meant that the latest Netflix drop saw Pope getting a larger part in the series. We got to know his family life and learned that he's a descendent of Denmark Tanney – the man whose treasure they've been hunting.
Josh Pate told Decider that the decision to focus on Pope happened early in the writing process for Season 2. He also revealed that the Outer Banks writing team plan to give every character their own major, season-long storyline should the show continue.
We can't wait to delve into the Outer Banks world even more.. c'mon Netflix – announce the renewal of season 3 already!
