Oz Climber's Body Recovered From Mount Everest

Oz Climber's Body Recovered From Mount Everest

The body of an Australian woman who died on Mount Everest has been recovered, as searches continue for two other climbers feared dead.

Maria Strydom had been descending the mountain with her husband when she collapsed and died from altitude sickness on Saturday.

Nearly a week after her death rescuers have retrieved her body and flew it to Nepal's capital on Friday morning.

Dr Strydom's husband, Robert Gropel, accompanied her body as it was driven to Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital morgue.

Mr Gropel has described his wife as the "perfect woman".

He told the ABC: "All I am thinking about is I want to get her home.

"I'm just trying to be strong, I'm learning to cope and block out what causes sort of, breakdowns and trying to get the job done of bringing my wife home."

Dr Strydom, 34, was a university lecturer from Melbourne who climbed Everest in a bid to prove that vegans can succeed at the toughest physical challenges.

Her sister Aletta Newman described her disbelief after hearing through media reports that Dr Strydom had died.

She said: "Even my dad...was like 'surely this can't be right, someone would have contacted us to let us know. This must be a mistake'.

"You go from complete disbelief to breaking down and shivering and starting to cry.

"And then anger about did someone do something wrong."

Searches continue for two missing Indian climbers who are presumed dead, and attempts were being made to bring down the body of another Indian climber who also died on Everest.

A helicopter was able to bring down the body of a Dutch climber on Thursday.

Nearly 400 foreign climbers and Sherpa guides have made it to the top of Everest this year.
