There are a few obvious necessities in life like air, water and food, and I believe that fall coats should also be added to that list. If we’re talking about fall coats under $100, then they should most definitely be added to that list. I’ve rounded up some of the trendiest coat styles that you’re going to need this season because, after all, necessities are the key to life.

My first look is a casual errands look. I don’t know about you, but in New York anything could happen when you step outside your door. (I think Carrie Bradshaw said this, so just go with it!) In 2020, we especially know this to be true. Running errands shouldn’t lack style or comfort, so I paired black sweatpants with a cropped sweater, sneakers and a leather puffer jacket.

Puffer jackets have been a staple in my wardrobe for a few years now, and they aren’t going anywhere. When I saw this jacket, I didn’t buy it at first —and then spent the entire day having buyers remorse. I know I really love a piece of clothing when I spend the whole day thinking about it. I think that might be what true love really is. Anyway, I went back to purchase it and now I don’t understand how I ever lived without it.

My next look is more leather, but can you blame me? Everyone needs that perfect leather jacket in their closet that goes with everything. This season, mine is from Princess Polly. I paired it with my go-to black skinny jeans, black hooded sweatshirt and black ankle combat boots.

I love the oversized collar and the belted waist on this jacket. Leather jackets can be so hard to find. But once you find the perfect one, it lasts for multiple seasons.

My next look is uptown chic. After all, every downtown look needs a complementary uptown look. We love a versatile fashionista. A long-line overcoat is a must this season. Plus, monochrome and neutrals are easy, effortlessly chic and perfect for lookin on-trend. I found this coat on ASOS, and I recommend sizing up. This coat is $103, and I know we said coats under $100, but I couldn’t not add this in! So, shhhhhh!

I paired this look with a monochrome winter-white mini-skirt, boots and top, but there are endless ways to style this coat. When you are thinking about buying a splurge item, if you can instantly think of multiple outfits you can create around it, then buy it! This coat is perfect for those chilly mornings in sweats or a sophisticated Saturday lunch. People always ask me what to wear when you first meet your partner’s parents. Well, this coat makes a statement and monochrome makes everyone happy!

Get ready for this season hottest trend: plaid over-shirts. I’ve seen these styled in multiple ways — you can layer one under a heavy jacket or make it the main statement piece. Plaid is very big for the fall. While I wasn’t loving this trend at first, I am fully here for it now.

I paired my plaid statement piece with black leather pants and a black high-neck shirt. I added a beanie to really bring out those apple-picking vibes and a heel, because we all know I’m not actually going apple picking unless it’s documented on Instagram.

This last look is a bit daring. I am fully aware that vinyl pants and a vinyl trench coat is a lot of vinyl, but fashion is about risks. Look at it this way: If it rains, you are in the perfect outfit! Trench coats are big for the fall and so are long leather coats. I decided to combine the two, and it’s a match made in heaven.

I paired it with black vinyl pants that I’ve had for three seasons now and a tight-fitting black top. Okay, not going to lie, this jacket is $111, but it’s not my fault! When I first found this coat, I thought it was $70. Then, realized I was looking at the price in Euros. We all make mistakes, and this one I got over quickly after receiving the coat in the mail. The muted gray color made up for my distain for spending over $100. I added my favorite combat boots again and felt like I was making a “Matrix” sequel. This look is perfect for that trendy art show your friend is hosting that you have zero interest in going to, but we love playing the part.
