Patrick Mahomes starts Super Bowl loss with second-worst first quarter of his career

It's usually Tom Brady getting off to slow starts in the Super Bowl.

But it was Patrick Mahomes who posted one of the worst first quarters of his career on Sunday en route to a dominant Tampa Bay Buccaneers victory.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback found himself under pressure early and often against the Bucs and struggled to get anything going through the air as the Chiefs mustered just a field goal in Super Bowl LV's opening stanza. It marked a sign of things to come as the Chiefs failed to find the end zone in the 31-9 Bucs win.

Second-worst first quarter of Mahomes' career

Mahomes completed just 2 of 9 pass attempts for a total of nine passing yards as the Bucs took a 7-3 lead through one quarter. The passing total marked the second-lowest of Mahomes' careeer. His worst? It was also against Brady, with a zero-yard effort in the first quarter of a 2019 AFC title game loss to the New England Patriots.

His best career first quarter also came against Brady earlier this season with a 229-yard passing performance to start Week 12's 27-24 victory over the Bucs.

The explosive offense that has come to define his time in Kansas City was nowhere to be found as the Tampa Bay defense was the big winner on Sunday.

Chiefs fail to score TD in stunning loss

By halftime, Mahomes had tallied just 67 passing yards. When the game was over, he'd completed 26 of 49 pass attempts for 270 yards, two interceptions and no touchdowns. Mahomes, 25, has plenty of time to add to his Super Bowl tally. But for now, the NFL still belongs to Brady.
