Pedro Pascal confirmed as Joel for ‘The Last of Us’ HBO show

Pedro Pascal has been cast as the lead in HBO’s upcoming show, The Last of Us, based on the best-selling video games series.

The Mandalorian star will be starring yet another iconic franchise. Pascal will be starring as Joel in HBO’s adaptation of the iconic Naughty Dog game and will be reunited with fellow Game of Thrones alum Bella Ramsey, who was cast as Ellie.

“Based on the critically acclaimed video game The Last of Us, developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation platforms, the story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed,” Deadline reports. “Joel (Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

Adapting The Last of Us for the small screen feels like bringing the franchise to a full circle. It’s been hailed by critics as one of the greatest video game series of all time and is famous for its phenomenal acting, careful storytelling and thought-provoking themes which easily rival what’s found in the best television dramas.

Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin will be helming The Last of Us show alongside Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog studio.

HBO’s The Last of Us also points to a larger trend of Hollywood eagerly adapting video game franchises with an unprecedented level of production and care. Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher (which borrows from both the original novels and also the video game series) turned out to be a surprising success.

For Naughty Dog in particular, The Last of Us is now its second property being adapted for traditional media. Uncharted, the film based on Naughty Dog’s wildly popular Uncharted games, is due out in 2022 with Tom Holland in the lead role of Nathan Drake.

As for Pascal, The Last of Us marks the second time he’ll be playing a beloved character who faces an unfortunate end. If you thought Oberyn Martell’s end was brutal, well, brace yourself — The Last of Us is coming.
