Pepe Le Pew Won’t Be Appearing In Warner Bros’ ‘Space Jam’ Sequel

EXCLUSIVE: He starred in the first Warner Bros. Space Jam movie back in 1996, however, Pepe Le Pew will not be showing up at all in the upcoming theatrical sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy on July 16.

With the Looney Tunes French skunk besieged by controversy in the wake of New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow slamming that the cartoon character “added to rape culture,” Deadline has learned that a hybrid live-action animation scene between Jane the Virgin actress Greice Santo and Pepe Le Pew, shot back in June 2019 for Space Jam 2 was left on the cutting room floor.

The live-action scene was filmed by the pic’s first director, Terence Nance. As we first reported in July 2019, Nance left the production with Malcolm D. Lee taking over. Under the direction of Lee, Pepe Le Pew was eliminated from the sequel a while ago and never animated for the live-action footage which was shot. According to sources who saw a rough cut three months ago, they didn’t see any kind of cameo by the skunk.

I understand that Pepe’s firing from Space Jam: A New Legacy has nothing to do with the recent remarks made by the New York Times’ Blow.

But wait until you hear about the scene with Pepe which was cut.

Pepe was set to appear in a black-and-white Casablanca-like Rick’s Cafe sequence. Pepe, playing a bartender, starts hitting on a woman at the bar played by Santo. He begins kissing her arm, which she pulls back, then slamming Pepe into the chair next to hers. She then pours her drink on Pepe, and slaps him hard, sending him spinning in a stool, which is then stopped by LeBron James’ hand. James and Bugs Bunny are looking for Lola, and Pepe knows her whereabouts. Pepe then tells the guys that Penelope cat has filed a restraining order against him. James makes a remark in the script that Pepe can’t grab other Tunes without their consent.

Upon learning that her scene with Pepe was cut, Santo was upset according to her spokesperson. The actress-singer has been a victim of sexual harassment and has spoken out against it; even recording a debut single “Você Você” back in February 2018 with multi- Grammy-winning producer Humberto Gatica to empower women to stand up to sexual predators and sexual harassment. Santo even has a non-profit, Glam with Greice, which aims to empower victims of domestic violence to change their lives for the better. Santo took joy in shooting the Space Jam sequel scene with Pepe, because the skunk finally gets his comeuppance.

A spokesperson for Santo tells Deadline today, “This was such a big deal for Greice to be in this movie. Even though Pepe is a cartoon character, if anyone was going to slap a sexual harasser like him, Greice wished it would be her. Now the scene is cut, and she doesn’t have that power to influence the world through younger generations who’ll be watching Space Jam 2, to let younger girls and younger boys know that Pepe’s behavior is unacceptable.”

Warner Bros has encountered problems before in recent years over Looney Tunes‘ politically incorrect characters. Last June, the old Looney Tunes streaming on HBO Max banned Elmer Fudd from using a gun, given the modification in response to US gun violence.

When reached, Warner Bros. did not provide comment on Pepe’s elimination for Space Jam: A New Legacy. James is a producer on the sequel alongside Ryan Coogler, Duncan Henderson, and Maverick Carter.

Loomis Sayles Investment Asia Pte. is bearish due to the Covid-19 situation.The rupiah has dropped 3.8% this year, the worst performer in emerging Asia after the Thai baht, as surging U.S. Treasury yields led to an outflow of funds from emerging-market assets. The currency fell as low as 14,635 per dollar on Tuesday, the weakest level since November.“The rupiah is among the most vulnerable among high-yield emerging-market currencies under risk-off sentiment,” said Arthur Lau, head of Asia ex-Japan fixed income at PineBridge in Hong Kong. “In the coming months, we expect the weakness of the rupiah to remain due to seasonal dividend and coupon repatriation in April-May and higher seasonal imports in the second quarter.”Indonesia’s currency is seen as a bellwether of risk in emerging Asia due to the relatively high foreign ownership of local assets and its generally open economy. The rupiah’s prolonged slide suggests there is a deeper shift away from developing nations than just a pullback from last year’s liquidity-fueled surge.Emerging-market stocks, bonds and currencies have all declined over the past three months with the biggest foreign-exchange losses in Brazil, Argentina and Turkey.“One of the most frequently asked investor questions in recent weeks has been whether it is time to buy the dip in Indonesia local markets?” Goldman Sachs analysts led by Zach Pandl in New York wrote in a research note this month. “The answer is ‘not yet’, in our view.”Goldman says its analysis indicates Indonesian bonds are not yet in cheap territory, and strong U.S. data suggests there’s the potential for even higher Treasury yields, which would be a further negative for the Asian nation’s assets.Bank Indonesia sees the rupiah rebounding due to the country’s low inflation and improving economic growth.     (Bloomberg) -- China’s yuan is unlikely to escape its current bout of weakness, even with help from U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.While Yellen’s decision not to name China as a currency manipulator removes a flash point, analysts say that tension between the two countries have moved to strategic issues such as technology leadership. The yuan is also weighed down by other factors including slowing capital flows and a narrowing yield spread with the dollar.“It takes away one source of pressure, but other areas of tensions with the U.S. remain,” said Dariusz Kowalczyk, chief China economist at Credit Agricole CIB. “The headline will likely provide only temporary support, given that other factors are in the driver’s seat for now.”The onshore yuan was steady at 6.5477 to the dollar as of 5:30 p.m. Shanghai time. China hasn’t used its exchange rate as a tool to address external influences such as trade disputes, Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at a briefing on Tuesday. The semiannual U.S. foreign-exchange report is expected this month. Here are more views on the development:Tariffs Remain“The event doesn’t suggest any improvement in China-U.S. bilateral relationship and/or a lowering of bilateral tariffs,” said Becky Liu, head of China macro strategy at Standard Chartered Plc in Hong Kong. “It simply reflects a changed strategy of the new U.S. administration –- that is, by working with U.S. allies to contain China in joint efforts instead of dealing with China matters bilaterally.”The U.S. still has tariffs placed on China that have already kicked in and are unlikely to be lifted in the near term, said Tommy Xie, head of Greater China research at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. “Things are still overshadowed by the upcoming U.S. bill on strategic competition, which will be considered on April 21,” he said.Less Confrontation“The tag was announced the previous time due to political tensions even though China didn’t meet the criteria of a currency manipulator,” said Xing Zhaopeng, senior China strategist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. “It doesn’t make sense for the U.S. to keep challenging China on the issue of foreign exchange unilaterally, rather the U.S. is showing it prefers to address individual topics separately rather than a full-scale confrontation. The currency problem is no longer a core issue of U.S.-China relations.”“It shows that interaction between China and the U.S. is becoming more rational and more compliant with market rules, which is good for yuan in the short-term,” said Ji Tianhe, head of FXLM strategy at BNP Paribas SA in Beijing. “But it doesn’t affect the overall trend in the second and third quarters. This can be read as the currency exchange-rate issue is no longer the core issue of the Sino-U.S. conflict.”“It can reduce volatility in the currency and make it better for financial markets,” said David Loevinger, an analyst at TCW Group Inc. in Los Angeles, and a former China specialist at the U.S. Treasury. “This administration is much more focused in a constant set of rules. The U.S. Treasury has set the criteria and China doesn’t meet the criteria.”No Positive EffectTensions only add pressure on the yuan if they flare up but won’t positively influence the currency if they simmer, according to Gao Qi, a currency strategist at Scotiabank. “The yuan is likely to range-trade while following a broad dollar movement as U.S.-China tensions stay under control for now,” he said.“Meanwhile, a forming golden cross may indicate some upside potential for” USD/CNH, he said, referring to the 50-day moving average indicator rising over the 100-day moving average.Pressure From Yields“The yuan is under pressure due to the higher Treasury yields -- we have calculated that renminbi spot is the most correlated currency in the world with the level of the 10-year UST yield, and we continue to expect the yield to trend higher,” Credit Agricole’s Kowalczyk said.“The yuan is also suffering from a decline in foreign interest in Chinese bonds, and CGBs in particular.     Seconda giornata di vaccinazione in Basilicata con Vaxzervia di Astrazeneca per gli anziani senza fragilità, anche senza prenotazione. Le somministrazioni sono centralizzate a Potenza e Matera, per le rispettive province, presso le tensostrutture (tende del Qatar) agli ospedali delle due città. Dopo la ressa di ieri a Potenza, è cambiata la modalità. Ieri potevano presentarsi i cittadini lucani ultrasessantenni (dai 60 ai 79 anni) mentre oggi solo i cittadini di età compresa fra i 75 e i 79 anni e domani, ultimo giorno, coloro con età compresa fra i 74 e i 70 anni. Code si registrano anche oggi a Potenza ma decisamente più gestibili, senza alcuna ressa. A Matera le somministrazioni sono iniziate alle 8.30, si protrarranno sino alle 18.30, e si stanno svolgendo in modo ordinato, le file scorrono senza problemi di assembramenti. La Asm, azienda sanitaria della provincia di Matera, ha comunicato che la fornitura di vaccini è sufficiente a garantire la copertura giornaliera di quanti si presenteranno al punto vaccinale. Situazione più ordinata a Matera. Dopo i disagi avvenuti a Potenza la decisione di vaccinare tutti senza prenotazione è stata oggetto di contestazione politica da parte del centrosinistra in Regione Basilicata, da parte di vari sindaci che chiedono di utilizzare anche i centri vaccinali nei Comuni e di organizzazioni sindacali. Lamentele, ovviamente, si sono registrate da parte dei cittadini direttamente coinvolti per le lunghe code e i tempi di attesa. Il presidente Vito Bardi ha così deciso di rimodulare l'organizzazione, restringendo la partecipazione agli ultrasettantenni, ma nel contempo è soddisfatto per l'elevato numero di dosi somministrate. "Un risultato di quasi 3000 vaccinazioni, quasi tutte Astrazeneca - dice il governatore lucano - che ci mette in linea con gli obiettivi e le modalità indicate dal Generale Figliuolo".
