Black Friday, Britain's biggest annual shopping event, returns for what could be its biggest year yet. Last year an estimated £5.76bn was spent across the country, with most of Britain's biggest high-street and online outlets taking part.

Traditionally taking place the day after Thanksgiving, this year's event falls on November 24. But if recent years are anything to go by, eager shoppers should keep their eyes peeled to their screens from mid -November as many outlets hold up to two weeks of discounts.

Black Friday sees a swathe of savings across almost every field imaginable and vacuum cleaners are certainly given a chance to shine. If you're looking for a new Dyson or Henry then Black Friday is the right time for you.

Choosing the right vacuum cleaner

With technology improving at staggering rates you'd think buying a vacuum cleaner would get easier. But it's no longer a simple choice of finding the best fit from a number of fairly similar contraptions.

Nowadays we have to sift through myriad features and industry jargon before making a choice. Do you need an upright or cylinder machine? Bag or bagless? Cordless or regular?

It's hard to tell exactly which will be best for your needs. Which is why we've attempted to simplify things for you. Take a look at our in-depth guide for a more detailed explainer

Upright or cylinder?

A fairly straightforward one. Upright vacuums tend to be more popular as they're easier to use and store; plus they're highly effective thanks to the brush bar, which helps remove dirt from those tough-to-reach areas.

Cylinder vacuums look like traditional vacuums and are generally cheaper, lighter and more compact. They're great for cleaning stairs and upholstery.

Bag or bagless?

Many vacuum cleaners have inner dust bags which store a limited amount of dirt and dust. A main benefit with this type is hygiene, as the airtight bag prevents the user from breathing in harmful dust, something worth considering for asthmatics. But it can be more expensive, you'll have to purchase refills, and as the bag fills productivity decreases.

Bagless vacuums are cheaper and easier to maintain, as you can easily see when the canister is full. But cleaning out the canister will expose you to lots of dust.

Cordless or wired?

Cordless vacuum cleaners are a fantastic option. They're light, compact and easy to use. Plus, they are handy if you want to clean outside the house, for example in the car.

However they can be expensive and tend to have low dust capacities and battery lives, so require constant care.

What deals can we expect?

It's too early to say exactly what deals will available; we're unlikely to know before mid-November at the earliest. If last year's deals are anything to go by some top vacuum cleaners will be on offer at unmissable prices.

This Dyson cordless vacuum was available for £189.99 from Argos, down from its RRP of £319.99, while the Vax SlimVac Fur & Fluff sold for £94.99 at Currys; it usually retails at £239.99.
